LIFE VIMINE aimed to protect salt marshes in the Venice Lagoon from erosion by demonstrating the efficacy and sustainability of an integrated approach comprising novel nature based solutions created in a circular economy framework, stakeholder participation, and ecosystem services assessment to support decision making. Local stakeholders had a crucial role in the project: nature-based solutions against erosion were co-designed with citizens and artisanal fishers from lagoon islands; fishers were then hired to construct and maintain nature based solutions and remove litter from salt marshes; a participatory process was set up to create a network of local businesses to promote sustainable tourism in the Lagoon; local citizens were involved in clean-up events to remove litter from salt marshes and in identifying priority salt marsh areas to protect.
